Ghanaian boxer Amadu Mohammed has secured a bronze medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after reaching the semi-finals of the men’s 55kg boxing competition in Glasgow.
The reigning African Games champion narrowly missed out on a place in the final after losing 4-1 by split decision to Australia’s Dixon Jye on Friday, July 31.
Amadu made a confident start to the bout, impressing all five judges in the opening round to take an early lead with unanimous 10-9 scores.
The momentum shifted in the second round as Jye fought back strongly, convincing four of the five judges to score the round in his favour and setting up a decisive final round.
Jye maintained his form in the closing stages of the contest, with all five judges awarding him the final round despite a determined effort from the Ghanaian boxer.
Under Commonwealth Games boxing rules, both defeated semi-finalists receive bronze medals, ensuring Amadu finishes the tournament on the podium.
The medal is Ghana’s second of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, following Zinabu Issah’s silver medal in the women’s F57 shot put.
Amadu’s podium finish also strengthens Team Ghana’s overall medal tally as the Games draw closer to an end.
