The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has recommended that Carlos Queiroz remain as head coach of the Black Stars following his work with the team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The GFA Executive Council reached the decision after reviewing the Portuguese coach’s performance during his short-term spell with the national team.
Queiroz was brought in on a four-month contract before the World Cup after Otto Addo’s departure.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed the decision, saying the Executive Council wants the 73-year-old to continue in the role.
“The council, which is the highest decision-making body, after assessing the performance of Coach Carlos Queiroz, have agreed that the coach is made to stay,” Asante Twum told Graphic Sports.
However, the GFA cannot finalise a new contract on its own.
The proposed deal will have to be approved by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, which is expected to fund Queiroz’s salary.
Asante Twum explained that the ministry would have to review and approve the contract before the Portuguese coach can formally continue in the job.
Questions have also been raised about whether Queiroz is still owed money following his work at the World Cup. Asante Twum said he could not confirm the situation because he was not involved in the coach’s financial arrangements.
The GFA’s decision is also based on a desire to avoid another quick change in the Black Stars’ technical team.
The association believes Queiroz could also have a stronger squad available for the next assignment, with Mohammed Kudus, Salisu Mohammed and Alexander Djiku among the players expected to return after missing the World Cup.
The Black Stars are preparing for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, making the question of the coach’s future an immediate priority.
Queiroz has reportedly been informed about the GFA Executive Council’s recommendation. However, it remains unclear whether he has accepted the proposal.
Asante Twum said he could not confirm the terms of the GFA’s proposed contract or whether Queiroz had made a counteroffer.
The next stage will involve discussions between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Queiroz before a final agreement can be reached.
