Telecel Ghana Secures 2.3 GHz Spectrum for 5G Rollout

Telecel Ghana has secured three spectrum lots in the 2.3 GHz band from the National Communications Authority (NCA), in a move to support its planned 5G rollout and expand mobile broadband capacity.

The award followed a competitive licensing process conducted by the NCA covering the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 3 GHz spectrum bands. Telecel obtained all three lots it applied for in the 2.3 GHz band.

The company’s Director of External Affairs, Mr. Komla Buami, said the additional spectrum would strengthen Telecel’s network capacity and help improve the quality of services offered to customers.

He described the award as a significant step towards the company’s preparations for 5G, adding that the additional capacity would enhance customer experience and support Ghana’s growing digital economy.

Mr. Buami also welcomed the opportunity for continued engagement with the NCA on spectrum rationalisation, which aims to promote the efficient use of available frequency resources across the telecommunications industry.

He noted that an effective spectrum framework would help support investment in network infrastructure, improve service delivery and accommodate the increasing demand for mobile connectivity.

According to the details of the licensing process, five lots were made available in the 2.3 GHz band, with Telecel applying for and securing three. The assignment was completed in line with the requirements outlined in the Request for Applications.

The award is part of broader efforts to make additional spectrum available for mobile broadband and support the expansion of 5G connectivity in Ghana.
