Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie has linked the Ghana Premier League’s difficulty in securing major sponsorship deals to concerns about the credibility of the competition.
According to Afriyie, perceptions that matches and results can be influenced have made some companies reluctant to put their money into the league.
He made the comments in an interview with Sporty FM ahead of the start of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
“The struggle to attract sponsorship for the Ghana Premier League is because many people see the competition as being manipulated,” he said.
Afriyie added that companies would be hesitant to invest in a competition whose credibility is being questioned.
“When a league lacks credibility, which company would want to invest in it?”
His comments come as the new Premier League season prepares to get underway on September 5, 2026.
The Ghana Premier League continues to face challenges in attracting the level of commercial investment seen in some other football leagues. Clubs depend on sponsorship, broadcasting income, match-day revenue and other commercial sources to support their operations.
Issues surrounding officiating and the general administration of the competition have also been the subject of discussion among supporters and people within Ghana football.
For Afriyie, attracting bigger sponsors will depend largely on rebuilding confidence in the league.
He believes companies need to have trust in the competition before they will be willing to commit significant resources to it.
The 2026/27 season will see Ghana’s top-flight clubs compete for the league title, places in African competitions and the financial benefits that come with success.
