Ahafo Ano South East Member of Parliament Yakubu Mohammed has apologized following public criticism over a comment he made to a schoolgirl during a visit to Parliament.
The MP, in a statement issued on July 31, 2026, described the remark as inappropriate because it involved a child and expressed regret over his choice of words.
The controversy followed a video from a visit by pupils of The Citadel School in the Sagnarigu Constituency to Parliament House. In the footage, the MP is heard telling a female pupil that she was beautiful and that he would marry her when she grew older.
Explaining the circumstances surrounding the comment, Mr. Mohammed said it was made within the context of a traditional and playful relationship between the Mossi and Dagomba communities.
He said, as a member of the Mossi community interacting with Dagomba visitors, the remark reflected the type of friendly exchanges that have existed between the two groups over generations. However, he admitted that the wording was unsuitable given the age of the child involved.
“The comment was not intended to cause harm, disrespect, embarrassment or discomfort to the pupil, her family, the school authorities, the Dagomba community or the general public,” he said.
The MP added that he recognized the responsibility that comes with holding public office and apologized to the pupil, her parents, school authorities and members of the public.
He further pledged to uphold the dignity, welfare and rights of children in his public conduct.
The apology comes after the video attracted criticism online, with some members of the public and child protection advocates raising concerns about the appropriateness of the comment.
