The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, has unveiled a four-year strategic agenda aimed at strengthening the university’s finances, expanding research, enhancing teaching and positioning the institution for greater global recognition.
Professor Aheto, who is to be formally inducted into office on Saturday, said his 2026–2030 vision would guide the university’s growth through innovation, accountability and collaboration while preserving its academic excellence.
He said his administration intends to adopt a more sustainable approach to managing the university’s resources by combining sound business practices with UCC’s core mission of teaching, research and community service.
According to him, transparency, prudent financial management and a strong monitoring and evaluation system will underpin the implementation of the plan.
The Vice-Chancellor identified increased research funding as one of his administration’s priorities, saying UCC would strengthen partnerships with government, industry and development organizations to support innovation and institutional growth.
He also pledged to produce globally competitive graduates by improving academic programs, encouraging interdisciplinary research and creating more opportunities for students to develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
Professor Aheto said his administration would focus on five strategic areas: sustainable financing and resource mobilisation, stronger institutional governance, staff development and research excellence, improved teaching and learning supported by digital innovation, and greater commitment to diversity, equity and environmental sustainability.
He disclosed that UCC’s current Corporate Strategic Plan, which ends in 2027, will be reviewed to align with his vision and lay the foundation for a new strategy covering the period from 2028 to 2032.
Professor Aheto was appointed Vice-Chancellor on May 15, 2026, after serving as Pro Vice-Chancellor and later Acting Vice-Chancellor. A fisheries and environmental scientist, he joined UCC as a lecturer in 2009 and rose through the academic ranks to become a full professor in 2020.
Over the course of his career, he has led several academic and research initiatives, including the establishment of UCC’s Centre for Coastal Management, and has published more than 50 peer-reviewed research papers.
He succeeds in leading one of Ghana’s leading public universities at a time when higher education institutions are under increasing pressure to diversify funding, strengthen research and improve graduate employability.
